Michael Takeuchi: Practical Approaches for Smaller ISPs — Lessons from the Field
Running a smaller ISP can be as challenging as managing a large one — sometimes even more so. Limited resources, complex technical demands, and the need to remain competitive in a fast-changing market all create a unique operational reality. At BalticNOG 2025, Michael Takeuchi, Chief Technology and Operating Officer at RAPIDNET and Deputy Chief for IIX & Data Center at APJII, will share his insights into solving these challenges with practical, efficient, and collaborative approaches.
Michael’s career is rooted in hands-on engineering, and his work has spanned network design, security, and infrastructure operations. Based in Jakarta, Indonesia, he oversees technical operations and infrastructure development for RAPIDNET, a growing ISP and system integrator. His dual role at APJII places him at the heart of Indonesia’s Internet development efforts, where he works on improving interconnection and fostering collaboration among diverse Internet stakeholders.
Focusing on BGP, Traffic Engineering, and IXPs
In his BalticNOG session, Michael will explore operational strategies for smaller ISPs that must maximize resources while maintaining reliable, high-performance networks. Drawing on his experience, he will cover topics such as optimizing BGP routing for stability and efficiency, applying traffic engineering techniques to use existing capacity better, and designing robust network architectures that can evolve as the business grows.
Michael will also discuss Internet Exchange Point (IXP) operations, offering a view from both the service provider and national association perspectives. He believes that IXPs play a crucial role in improving performance and resilience for ISPs of all sizes, and that cooperation among network operators is key to building stronger Internet ecosystems.
A Philosophy of Cooperation and Simplicity
Underlying Michael’s technical strategies is a clear philosophy: the Internet works best when stakeholders collaborate and share practical knowledge. His approach prioritizes simplicity, real-world efficiency, and solutions that can be implemented without unnecessary complexity. For smaller ISPs, this mindset can be the difference between struggling to keep up and thriving in competitive environments.
Attendees can expect to leave with actionable ideas they can apply immediately — from refining routing policies to building stronger relationships with peers and partners in the Internet community.
